Thin Their Numbers

To reduce overpopulation of a species by hunting. This occurs most often in deer populations. Deer often overpopulate their environment and face starvation in winter. Hunting authorities then authorize hunters to "Thin the Herd" by hunting on the reasoning that is better they die fast by gunfire than slowly by starving.

This also preserves a healthy deer stock as the remaining deer have more access to food in the winter.
